Frequently Asked Questions about Gun License Training
1. Language Requirements for the Exam
The course and examination are offered only in English
The written test is multiple-choice, and the practical exam requires verbal responses in English.
The exams are closed-book. No interpreters or electronic devices are allowed. Therefore, a solid proficiency in English (equivalent to IELTS General 5.5 or higher) is required if you want to understand and pass the tests.
2. Who Can Take the Course?

Non-Restricted Course (long guns): Minimum age is 12 years old.

Restricted Course (handguns): Minimum age is 18 years old.
Anyone holding a study permit, work permit, visitor visa, permanent residency, or Canadian citizenship is eligible to take the course.
3. Training Schedule

Non-Restricted (long guns): 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, followed by immediate testing.

Restricted (handguns): 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM, followed by immediate testing.
Students must pass the non-restricted test before attending the restricted course.
RCMP regulations require at least two days for combined non-restricted and restricted training.

Non-restricted course must be at least 8 hours

Restricted course must be at least 4 hours
Courses not meeting these standards will be considered invalid.
4. Course & Testing Fees (CAD only: cash or Email Transfer)

Only the combined package is offered in Ontario.
Manitoba (Winnipeg) –Pricing:

Non-Restricted: $150 per person

5. Training Locations
-
Ontario: Primarily in Markham and Scarborough. On-site training available for larger groups (including Ottawa, London).

Quebec: Occasional sessions in Ottawa for Quebec residents. Results can be used to apply for Quebec firearms license.

Manitoba: Winnipeg location near the University of Manitoba, Richmond West area. Exact address provided after registration.
6. How to Register
A $100 deposit is required via cash or Email Transfer.
To change your training date, you must notify us at least 7 days in advance. No-shows or late changes will not be refunded.
Class schedule is available on the "Booking" page of the website. If your preferred dates aren’t listed, please contact Instructor Huang directly for alternate options.
7. Application Fees (not included in course fees)
Based on RCMP rates as of end of 2024:

Non-Restricted PAL: $67.38

Restricted PAL: $89.85

Combined Application: $89.85
Fees must be paid directly to the RCMP.
8. Exam Difficulty and Format

Written Test: 50 multiple-choice questions, no short-answer

Practical Test: 50 items focused on safe handling (no live-fire shooting)

Passing Score: 80%

One retake is allowed if you fail
Ontario retake fee: $67.80
Winnipeg retake fee: $30.00
If you fail the retake, you must repay the full course fee to retake the course.
9. Do You Receive a Firearms License Right After the Course?
No. You will receive a Course Report (proof of training). You must use this to apply for your firearms license.
Processing typically takes around 3 months before you receive your license and can purchase firearms.
10. License Application Requires Two References
You must list two references who:

Are at least 18 years old

Have known you for at least 3 years

Are not your spouse

Can be contacted by phone during RCMP verification (international numbers accepted)
References do not need to be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or PAL holders.
Basic English or French communication skills are required.
11. Learners Who Have Lived in Canada for Less Than 5 Years
Must provide a criminal record check from their home country, with official English translation, when mailing the license application. Photocopies are accepted.
You may begin preparing this document during the course and submit it after passing the exam.
Those who have lived in Canada for 5+ years do not need to provide this.
12. Course Results & License Validity

Course Report: Valid for life (unless revoked due to violent crime)

Firearms License: Must be renewed every 5 years. Renewal requires updated photo and application form.

Renewal fees are paid directly to the RCMP.
13. Can You Take the Course on a Student, Visitor, or Temporary Visa?
Yes. You can take the course and apply for a firearms license.
Your license validity is not tied to your visa duration.
14. Can You Hunt with a Firearms License only?
No. A separate hunting license and course are required.
15. Is a Firearms License Valid Across All Provinces?
Yes. The PAL is federally issued and valid across Canada.

17. Reschedule & Cancellation Policy

If you cancel 7+ days in advance, your deposit will be refunded.

If you cancel within 7 days, you may find a replacement to attend in your place, or the deposit/course fee will be forfeited.
In Ontario:
If you fail the first day (non-restricted), you may still attend the second day (restricted course).
However, no refunds will be given if you choose not to attend.
Please notify us in advance if you require an official receipt.
